2,5-Dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMTD) is a sulfur-containing heterocyclic compound widely used as a vulcanization accelerator in rubber industry and corrosion inhibitor in metal treatment. It has a melting point of 162°C (dec.) and demonstrates excellent solubility in alkaline solutions (20 g/L at 20°C) but poor solubility in water. The compound acts as a versatile analytical reagent that forms colored complexes with metals (red with bismuth, brown with copper, yellow with lead), making it valuable for colorimetric determination of bismuth and spectrophotometric analysis of antimony/palladium. Safety precautions are required due to its irritant properties (GHS Category 2).
