Product Description

Benzyl phenyl sulfide is the simplest aromatic–aliphatic mixed thio-ether, consisting of a benzyl and a phenyl group linked by a sulfur atom. The compound is air-stable, freely soluble in dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, toluene, alcohols and hot water, and essentially insoluble in cold water. Commercial material is supplied ≥98 % pure.
Key physicochemical data:
Melting point: 36–38 °C (lit.)
Boiling point: 298 °C / 760 mmHg (predicted)
Density: 1.09 g cm⁻³ (40 °C, liquid)
Refractive index n²⁰/D: 1.622 (40 °C)
Flash point: 168 °C (closed cup)
Log P (octanol/water): 4.3 (predicted)
Typical uses:
High-temperature lubricant antioxidant and extreme-pressure (EP) anti-wear additive for gear oils and greases.
Slow-release sulfur donor for vulcanising polar rubbers (NR, NBR) and for producing benzyl-based pharmaceutical intermediates.
Model substrate for mechanistic studies on C–S bond activation, radical thiol–sulfide exchange and benzyl-radical chemistry.
Quality specification (commercial grade):
Purity (GC): ≥98 %
Water content (KF): ≤0.2 %
Free thiol (as PhSH or BnSH): ≤0.1 %
Residue on ignition: ≤0.1 %
Heavy metals: ≤20 ppm
Hazard statement:
Causes skin and eye irritation (H315 + H319). Avoid inhalation of vapour; use gloves, goggles and adequate ventilation. Store in a cool, dry place away from oxidants. SDS available on request.
