Product Description

4-Bromo diphenyl sulfide is an aromatic thio-ether in which a bromine atom is located para to the sulfur bridge on one benzene ring. The compound is air- and photo-stable, freely miscible with common organic solvents (dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, toluene, alcohols) and essentially insoluble in water. Commercial material is supplied ≥98 % pure.
Key physicochemical data:
Melting point: 42–44 °C (lit.)
Boiling point: 320 °C / 760 mmHg (predicted)
Density: 1.45 g cm⁻³ (25 °C, solid)
Refractive index n²⁰/D: 1.620 (50 °C)
Flash point: >110 °C (closed cup)
Log P (octanol/water): 4.7 (predicted)
Typical uses:
Versatile building block for 4-bromo-diphenyl sulfoxide/sulfone pharmaceutical intermediates and agro-chemicals.
Precursor for para-bromo diaryl sulfones used as COX-2 inhibitors, herbicide safeners and UV-absorbers.
Model substrate for mechanistic studies on electron-deficient C–S bond activation and cross-coupling reactions.
