3-Chlorothioanisole is an organo-sulfur aromatic building block that carries a methyl-sulfide group meta to the chlorine substituent. This substitution pattern gives the molecule a unique reactivity profile: the electron-donating thio-ether directs electrophilic attack to the 2-, 4- and 6-positions, while the C–Cl bond is readily activated toward nucleophilic aromatic substitution, Suzuki, Heck and Buchwald–Hartwig cross-couplings, providing rapid access to meta-substituted thio-ethers, sulfoxides, sulfones and bi-aryl sulfides under mild conditions (dioxane, 50–120 °C) . Down-stream, 3-chlorothioanisole is oxidised to 3-chlorophenyl methyl sulfone (H₂O₂, CH₃COOH, 40 °C, 2 h, 92 % yield) or used as a ligand precursor for crop-protection agents, as a thio-ether linker in functional materials and as a flavour/fragrance intermediate after selective oxidation to the corresponding sulfoxide . The compound is stable for ≥ 24 months when stored sealed, dry and at ambient temperature; it exhibits low vapour pressure (0.19 mmHg, 25 °C) and is classified as an irritant with a pronounced odour (Xi, R36/37/38, UN 3334) .
