A sterically hindered, weakly odorous thiol (pKa 6.8) combining antioxidant potency with excellent thermal stability. Main uses include:
Polymer & rubber antioxidants: 0.1–0.5 phr protects NR, SBR and EPDM against oxygen and flex-cracking at 150 °C; non-staining and compatible with phenolic/phosphite systems.
Synthetic intermediate: building block for UV-absorbing benzothiazoles, hindered phenolic light stabilisers and optical brighteners; Cu-catalysed o-carborane chalcogenation gives high-Tg OLED materials.
Metal-surface treatment: forms densely packed SAMs on gold, lowering friction coefficient by 30 % and enhancing SERS sensitivity for mercury detection.
Food & feed additive: FDA/EFSA-listed flavouring (FEMA 4768) providing roasted, meaty notes at 0.5–2 ppm; also serves as a ligand in Ni-catalysed cross-couplings for agro-active synthesis.
