2-Ethylanthraquinone is an oil-soluble anthraquinone derivative bearing an ethyl group at the 2-position. The compound is practically insoluble in water (≈ 0.25 mg L⁻¹ at 25 °C), freely soluble in benzene, toluene and dichloromethane, and can be recrystallised from ethanol or acetic acid. It exhibits strong UV-A/UV-B absorption (λmax 330 nm, log ε 3.9) and is stable to oxidation and heat. Commercial material is supplied at ≥ 98.5 % purity and remains stable for ≥ 2 years when stored in tightly closed containers at < 30 °C away from light.
